Friday, June 7th

Coulee School week was amazing! The weather cooperated with us and we were able to have a week filled with movement, hands-on learning, and most importantly.. fun! Another huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers who joined our classes this week to the coulee or bannock making. Your continued support is so much appreciated! We couldn't do it without you.

In math, we are focusing on transformations (translation, rotation, and reflections). We are continuing to focus on story development, specific to developing effective character, setting, problem and with a clear beginning, middle, and end. In Inquiry, we are learning all about Light & Shadows - transparent, translucent, and opaque, light refraction, shadow direction.

As we wind down this incredible year we are hoping to have some extra fun in June:

Spirit Days: June 12 - Dress like a rockstar

                        June 19 - Dress Tropical

June 26 - Wear Red and White

Talent Show!

Eric Harvie is hosting a talent show, but not in the traditional sense.  We would love to see your talents through video format. This is a great way to see talents that can’t be performed in the school as well as those that can.  Please film your talent and add it to the Google folder Talent Show 2024.  Please understand that anyone with the link can watch the videos in the folder.  If you would prefer to transfer the video directly to me please use WeTransfer.com and use the email address jabaine@cbe.ab.ca

The deadline for talent show submissions is: Jun 19, 2024. It would be great if your child could introduce themselves and their talent. We will be watching the videos in our classes throughout the last week of school.

 Hello Families!

What a fun day was had today! Thank you to all students and families that came out and ran the Eric Harvie Fun Run this morning! The sun greeted us, which was such a wonderful present after this week's rain! Thank you volunteers for your help!

It's been a great week of learning!

Math- we are learning about transformations (the movement of objects - slide, flip and rotate) and finishing up fractions.

ELAL - We have been learning about story writing, concentrating on beautiful beginnings and character development. As well, writing various types of poetry and journal writing. We have been reading our class novel study, HOOT, which is getting some laughs each time we read!

Social Studies - We have begun to learn about the history of Alberta! This would be a great discussion to have with your child - What historical places have you been to in Alberta? Students are also finishing up some presentations on animals as well.

Science - Learners have been studying plants Indigenous to Alberta, drawing them them and learning facts such as the life cycle, where they grow, etc.

We need volunteers for Coulee School! :) Thank you!

May 17th

 Hello Everyone!

This week, all of our classes continued our coulee exploration in preparation for our Peace Assembly at the end of this month. We are looking forward to sharing our work with you on the 31st!

Our work with fractions this week was centred around making equivalent fractions and placing fractions with like and unlike denominators on a number line. Next week, we will be exploring telling time during Ignite.

Fictional story writing is underway. Our writing time has been focused on developing "Beautiful Beginnings" by introducing our character, setting and problem. We have been using a "Plot Mountain" to learn more about the necessary components of a fictional story. Students have explored other read aloud stories and Pixar Shorts to support their understanding of a story's plot.

In Music, students have been busy designing and painting their flutes!

To celebrate Asian Heritage Month, our groups are taking part in live video visits through Jube School in the next couple of weeks. This week, we were fortunate to have met with an artist who led us through a guided drawing of the dragon for the year of the dragon.

Important Notes:

- Running Club was postponed this week and will take place during both Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes next week

- Here is the link to sign up to volunteer during our bannock baking: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C4EA8A623A0FB6-49749520-bannock#/

 Hello families!

It's May and the sun is out today! The students truly loved the sunshine today after all that rain/snow/sleet/blizzard we had this week!

Students have been busy with their research about glacial erratics that we learned about on our coulee walk last week. We also saw the crocuses on the hillside while we were out there which led to an inquiry about them and some beautiful watercolour artwork! In math we are working to form a deeper understanding about fractions using manipulatives, through problem solving, other strategies and art. We have completed another round of small reading groups and will continue to focus on reading comprehension through stories - reading a variety of genres and then writing our own short stories. Students are working on perspective writing as well, including learning about the structure of this type of writing. We have also started a new novel study called Hoot. Students are enjoying it so far! Our Tomatosphere plants continue to be nurtured, some sprouting and others still dormant! We are learning more about decomposers and the parts of plants and flowers.

Announcements:

Music Monday - May 6 Does your child play a musical instrument? Upload a video onto their Google Drive of them playing a song they know! Or, if the instrument is portable, have them bring it in to school to play a song live!

Hats on for Mental Health - May 8 Wear your hat in school to show your support and awareness for Mental Health!

April 26th, 2024

 Hello Everyone!

This week, we were fortunate to have had a beautiful day to visit the coulee. We were joined by two parent volunteer geologists who taught us how rocks are formed, mined, and classified. Today, we also enjoyed a lovely presentation by the Grade 1/2's about The Wild Robot.

In Math, students are exploring fractions by representing sets and parts of a whole. We explored all of the ways where fractions can be found and used in our everyday lives. In the coulee, we found natural elements which can be expressed by using fractions.

In Literacy, students have been working on persuasive pieces, as well as perspective writing, by writing from the perspective of a rock. We have been learning about personification and using sensory language to make our writing shine. We also continue to work on our Alberta Animal research and final projects to be shared in a presentation.

Ms. Tait visited our whole group today to share her story of the prairie crocus. We created watercolour crocus art based on the story and our run-ins with the crocus during our recent coulee walk. It is exciting to finally be seeing sure signs of spring!

Notes for next week:

- 3/4 Huebner/Stacey are going on their field trip to the Leighton Arts Centre on Monday. A reminder to please dress for the weather!
- Our book club literacy groups are coming to an end on Tuesday. We will continue with in-class literacy programming in the weeks to come!

Have a lovely weekend!
