Hello Gr. 3 and 4 families!

It was a shorter week, but we sure learned a lot! This week, for Ignite, we focused on more mindfulness techniques and reflected upon our year so far. We revisited Zones of Regulation using chalk pastels, completed a checklist, reflected on and set goals for the remainder of the year in our visual journals.

In math, we continue to master our basic facts (gr 3 - up to 10 x10 and gr 4 - up to 12 x 12). We would appreciate your support with helping your child become successful at mastering these facts. Just taking 5 minutes a day to practice is so beneficial! We are learning many strategies to solve larger digit numbers in the coming weeks. You may notice the standard algorithm and also some new ones that your child can teach you! We have completed our beautiful shape art based off of the work from Kandinsky! Check out the pictures below!

We continue to work on Words Their Way as a way of learning how to spell, recognize and read a variety of words. We work on them in class each week but some students may need some extra time at home to practice more challenging words. We are reading books about important leaders for Black History Month and the upcoming Pink Shirt Day. As well, we are focusing on creating detailed writing whether through nonfiction paragraphs, biographies or summaries of what we have read.

In inquiry we are learning all about simple machines, sketching and observing like Leonardo da Vinci! Through the scientific method we will complete demonstrations and experiments to learn how these simple machines make work easier. In social studies, we are learning about the regions of Alberta, researching with a variety of sources, working with a group and taking jot notes in our own words.

Important Dates:

February 28 - Virtual Author Presentation, PINK SHIRT DAY  (wear a pink shirt in support of anti-bullying!)

March - Swimming (Please ensure you have completed the necessary forms and returned them to school)

Wednesday, February 14th

 Hello Families,

Here are a few reminders

  • There is no school until Tuesday of next week
  • Swimming permission forms are due today. If you have not returned your child's forms, please remember to do so Tuesday
We had a very short week this week. We created mathematical art based on the work of Kandinsky by incorporating what we have learned about angles, shapes, and types of lines. In Math, we learned the box method strategy to multiply 2x1 and 3x1-digit numbers. Our fable exploration continued and students worked on making predictions and identifying the moral in their assigned fable. Mission Impossible was set up by staff in the gym this week and students were able to put their gymnastics practice to use while making their way carefully through the course. Today was the last day of our targeted literacy groups for this round and new groups/focuses will be created later in the term. Students also created Valentine's bags today and enjoyed passing out Valentines to their classmates.

Friday Feb 9

Our Learning Folders are being sent home for the students to share our learning of multiplication and division thus far. The students have been working hard to learn and implement new strategies and to show their mathematical thinking through representations of numbers, pictures and words! Please return the green folder back to the school.

We continue to learn about da Vinci and his contributions to science and art! We started some research and drawings and continue to make connections to simple machines. In math we continue to practice basic facts and we are learning new strategies to calculate multi-digit numbers. We will continue to build our toolkit over the next weeks. We began to learn about fables and we have been practicing our skills at making predictions of what will happen next in the story!

Please Note:
Valentine's is coming up next week. We have had some families asking for names of students. Any students that want to participate we have attached a class list below with names. Participation is optional. It is not expected for students to participate.

It's Ground Hog Day! Will we have an early spring? :)

We've all been enjoying the beautiful weather this week with some great outdoor break time!

This week Chinook went to Telus Spark Science Centre. Ms Stacey's group will be heading there next week! This was an awesome kickoff to our next science topics! The triad is beginning to learn more about Leonardo da Vinci and the simple machines that make work easier. For those of us that went, we reflected on what we observed at the science centre through visual journals and writing.

In math, we are learning all about multiplication and division! Students have been asked to practice their basic facts (up to 10 x 10 for grade 3 and 12 x 12 for grade 4). It is very important to master and recall basic facts quickly as it will help when we complete more difficult equations. Learners are already learning many strategies including repeated addition, using number lines, arrays and some quick tricks to solve x by 0's, 1's, 2's, 9's, 10's and 11's.

3/4 Stacey has their trip coming up on Monday, February 2nd
