Friday, November 24

Hello Families!

We had a very busy week preparing for parent teacher conferences. We were happy to meet and see all the parents who were able to visit! Check the bottom of this posts for some links to learning :)

Math- We continue to work on addition and subtraction with regrouping up to 1 000

Inquiry- We explored the model of states of matter, and learned that all matter is made of atoms. In social studies we are learning mapping skills and learning about the communities we know about in Alberta. We finished our STEM challenge in building and designing a wheel for the Rover to withstand a rough terrain.

Literacy- Students continue to practice their reading skills using Raz Kids and Read to Self. Classes worked descriptive language techniques like Show No Tell. Our goal is to make our writing more interesting and to hook the reader. We worked on punctuation, spelling and sentence structure.

Ignite - We practice our drawing skills and linked eyes to different emotions. How can you evoke emotion in your character?

Next week students will take their math learning up a notch and begin adding and subtractiong multiple digit numbers. Grade 4s need to practice up to 10 000.00 (including up to the hundredth place) and grade 3 will practice up to 1 000. We will continue to paint a picture with our words by appealing to our senses. In inquiry we are looking forward to exploring an experiement using solids, liquids and gasses.

Friday, November 17

 Hello Families!

We hope everyone had a nice fall break. In this short week we accomplished a lot! This week was Metis Week! In celebration of the Metis culture, we learned to jig, created dot art, and listened to music from Metis artists.

  • Math - We continue to work on addition and subtraction basic facts and larger number addition and subtraction strategies, including regrouping through calculations and problem solving.
  • Inquiry- We are learning about states of matter, creating potions and learning that all matter is made of atoms. In social studies we are learning mapping skills and learning about the communities we know about in Alberta.
  • ELA - Students continue to practice their reading skills through read to self, read to others, through guided reading and small reading groups. Classes are learning to create more descriptive sentences using adjectives and adverbs. Our class read aloud, A Rover's Story, has been very fun to listen to and to learn about Mars and STEM-based ideas!
Next week are Parent/Child/Teacher conferences. Please watch for a message from the office to book an appointment for next Thursday evening or Friday. Looking forward to meeting with everyone!

November 9th

 Hello Families,

We had a short week this week, as our fall break began on Wednesday. We focused our morning Ignite time around Math puzzles. Students had the opportunity to use technology, pyramids and partner support to solve mathematical problems. Much of our learning this week was centred around Remembrance Day and we sat in on a beautiful service put on by 3/4 Cox/Patterson to honour this day.

Learning Intentions from the week:

  • I can assess the reasonableness of a sum or difference using estimation
  • I can identify the place value of whole numbers including the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones place
  • I can round numbers to various places, including tens and hundreds place
  • I can partition numbers using "part-part-whole" models
  • I can create a scientific plan and build a wheel prototype which will move over terrain
  • I can write a thoughtful message in letter form to honour the sacrifices of others
  • I can experiment with procedural writing by using transition words and steps to explain how to...
  • I can use my understandings of phonics to decode words at my level

  • A reminder that classes resume next Wednesday, November 15h. Enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable Fall break time with your family!

The week flew by and it was full of events! We worked on symmetry drawing and used our creative skills to create unique drawings during our transformation station. Students worked on multi-digit addition and subtraction and we are building upon our strategies to solve equations more efficiently. We continued our novel study and started a challenge building project. In literacy, students have been working on story writing and continue to be part of our daily targeted groups.

Learning Intentions from the week:
  • I can express my ideas and information accurately and creatively through writing.
  • I can expand my vocabulary by learning new words and their meanings.
  • I can use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words in a text.
  • I can apply phonics skills to decode and read unfamiliar words.
  • I can recognize and use common spelling patterns and phonetic rules when reading and writing.
  • I can use the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing) to improve my writing.
  • I can add two or more three-digit numbers using various strategies, including mental math, counting on.
  • I can identify different states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and give examples of each.
  • I can describe the properties of matter, such as size, shape, color, and texture.
  • I can identify and describe the basic parts and functions of wheels.
  • I can recognize the significance of traditional knowledge, stories, and oral histories of Indigenous peoples.

Looking Ahead:
  • I can apply addition skills to solve word problems involving numbers within 1,000.
  • I can add whole numbers within 10,000 using various strategies.
  • I can identify and use literary devices, such as figurative language and descriptive details, in my writing.
  • I can identify and describe the basic parts and functions of wheels.
  • I can design and conduct simple experiments to test hypotheses.
  • I can recognize the significance of traditional knowledge, stories, and oral histories of Indigenous peoples.
  • I can reflect on the role of individuals and communities in shaping Alberta's future.
  • I can demonstrate empathy and a sense of responsibility towards people and the environment on a global scale.
  • I can demonstrate respect for the traditions and perspectives of First Nations and Métis communities.
